Research Permits


When do I submit what?
Some forms can be submitted simultaneously. Follow the Research Flow charts below to determine when you can submit the necessary forms.

If you are conducting non-invasive research:


1. Submit MRC proposal
  • You must submit this at least 6 months in advance
  • Steps and forms can be found here
2. Obtain a research permit from NACOSTI
  • You must apply for this before arriving in Kenya
    • You cannot come to Mpala until you have your research permit in hand
  • Steps for applying for your permit can be found:

  • You may apply online here

3. Obtain a visitor's visa
  • This can be obtained upon entry to Kenya at the airport
  • The visa will last for 1, 2, or 3 months, depending on which visa you receive
4. Obtain a research pass
  • You must have the research permit to apply for the research pass
  • You must receive the research pass before your visitor's visa expires
  • If you do not receive your research pass before your visitor's visa expires, then you must visit the immigration department for a visa extension
  • Receiving the research pass changes your status in Kenya from being a visitor to being a researcher

  • This form must be submitted to the immigration department in Nairobi
5. Apply for the alien certificate
  • You must apply for the alien certificate immediately upon receiving the research pass
  • The application for an alien certificate can be found here (or the form can be accessed here: Page 1, Page 2)
  • This form must be submitted to the immigration department in Nairobi or in Nyeri
6. Apply for the re-entry pass
  • If you plan on leaving and re-entering Kenya at any time over the duration of your research pass, you must apply for a re-entry pass

  • This form must be submitted to the immigration department in Nairobi or Nyeri

If you are conducting invasive research without taking samples out of Kenya:


1. Submit MRC proposal [see above for details]
2. Follow KWS protocols

3. Follow Steps 2-6 [above]

If you are conducting invasive research and taking samples out of Kenya:


1. Submit MRC proposal [see above for details]

3. Follow Steps 2-6 [above]
4. Submit NEMA permits
  • Go here for forms and details


**The research pass will be replacing the pupil's pass. If you are currently on a pupil's pass, you will not be penalized, but you must apply for a research pass as soon as your pupil's pass expires.
 


Live Animal Traps


If bringing live animal traps into the country, you need to first obtain a letter from KWS in order to not have your traps confiscated.
