Mpala Research Centre Objectives

The Mpala Research Centre aims to:

  • Develop an enduring facility for research and training in pure and applied sciences at regional, national, and international levels;
  • Advance the understanding of ecosystem and landscape processes in semi-arid savannas through observation and experimentation;
  • Define key ecosystem components and processes that will be the target of explicit management plans and policies;
  • Operate a long-term environmental monitoring program, directed towards understanding biotic processes, and identifying mechanisms for maintaining the integrity of a semi-arid savanna ecosystem;
  • Assemble, digitize, and analyze information gathered by environmental monitoring into an integrated and interactive database, with spatial data organized within a Geographic Information System;
  • Disseminate information and expertise on integrated landscape management in semi-arid savannas through training, seminars, and publication of reports and papers;
  • Contribute to the sustainable development of local communities through environmental education and training, and support programs aimed at the ecological stabilization of natural resources within the project area;
  • Develop appropriate methods for biodiversity assessment for this habitat and collaborate with other regional and national agencies in conserving the region's biodiversity;
  • Provide training opportunities in these skills for students from regional nations;
  • Provide a model for the establishment of similar centers elsewhere;
  • Solicit, select, and assist to fund proposals by researchers applying to work at Mpala that are consistent with the goals and aspirations of the Centre;
  • Design and raise funds for specific scientific projects, training, or education programs in collaboration with academic institutions and development agencies;
  • Forge collaborations with other regional agencies and institutions, such as the Laikipia Wildlife Forum, that have common goals and aspirations.
